Project: Photographic Book Covers

Exercise: Choosing Your Imagery.

Disguise.

The image reflects, either through a frosted window or a misted mirror, the age of the main character at the time the story is told. The theme is one of identity. The art designer has this out of focus image of a middle aged man to indicate his identity is ill defined. The use of spectacles is another device to emphasise this aspect. Another device to confirm this lack of vision/identity, is the title, placed in large font across the eyes. The authors name, still continuing the theme, is placed unobtrusively with a minimum of contrast, across the bottom of the frame.

My Unwritten Books.

A simple image that cleverly illustrates the title. Here the author's name dominates the cover. The eye then drops down the cover to the title positioned between two bookends. The font of the title deliberately made small to indicate the lack of books.

Censoring an Iranian Love Story.

This is the love story of two Iranians, Dara and Sara and the pernicious censorship that exists in Iran. The aspect of censorship has been emphasised by both the heavily redacted sheet of prose and the cutout relating it to the use of the veil or burqa. The love interest by the attractive eyes behind. The artist has relied on the main image to draw the eye to the book.  The title and author's name placed discretely towards the base of the cover.

Amongst Other Things .......

The designer has related the extremes of Miranda's life between the peaceful environment of Crab Island and the frenetic atmosphere of New York. These two dramatically different environments are symbolically represented by the images at the top and bottom of the cover. In between is a large blue space indicating the huge mental travel and adjustment that was necessary for Miranda as the knowledge of her father's life becomes known to her.The title and author's name being edged in with small font.

The American West.

This portrait of a young women , clad unattractively in a boiler suite gives only a hint of the contents. Avedon's book contains portraits of a selection of the population of the American West taken during the 1960's. It provides a grim perspective of the West indicating a life of drudgery and toil. The cover image is compatible with the contents. Here the girl is in a defensive pose, expression tired and wary. There is no subtlety in the cover. Here it is - harshly framed - with the title and author's name boldly plastered top and bottom.
Exercise: Conceptual Cover Design.
Missing Men.
Joyce Johnson.
Her life has been shaped by the disappearance of men close to her either
through death or divorce.

Design Process.
Intimate relationships > Bed > Crumpled sheet symbolically representing a body lying in a semi foetal position facing the closely abutting bed > Pillow
is positioned towards the adjacent bed > 'Missing' is
emphasised by the elusive 'i' and the two indentations in the pillow.

Honeymoon's Over.
A series of essays concerning the writers' past relationships with others.

Design Process.
Life > karma, has been, spilt milk > Burnt Toast > title in strong contrast with black of toast > emphasise OVER > get on with
your life.

A General Theory of Love.
A scientific analysis of human emotions particularly that of love.

Design Process.
Scientific analysis > almost empty room decorated in bland  monochrome colour > relationships > two basic chairs > tilt one coyly
towards the other to indicate emotional interest > box text precisely emphasising title.
